Latin American Media Arts Symposium (LAMAS)
The first edition of the Latin American Media Arts Symposium (LAMAS) took place from October 4 to 7, 2023, in Toronto. Over the course of 4 days, artists, filmmakers, critics, and academics engaged with Latin American* artistic production in Canada. The symposium included performances, panel discussions, round tables, workshops, and community building activities and explored new perspectives on the processes, methodologies, and discussions informing the production of contemporary media arts in Canada, and its intersections with diasporic identities.
LAMAS is a project by Southern Currents Film & Video Collective and aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival. Organized by Nicole Cartier Barrera, LAMAS Programming Director, with support from Sinara Rozo, Southern Currents Executive Director and an incredible production team.
See the Alucine and LAMAS website for the full program and more information on the symposium.
* LAMAS acknowledges that terms such as Latino, Latina, Latinx, or Latin American can be restrictive. Whenever using the term Latin American, we are referring to anyone with Latin American ancestry, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, language, gender, and legal status.
