Chicano Fest

Chicano Fest took place from May 3 – 7, 2023  in Guadalajara, Mexico. The festival visualizes Chicano culture in the processes of ex(in)clusion through massive deportation, and challenges faced by the Chicano community in Mexico.  

Programming included roundtables with artists, activists, and scholars; a low rider performance; rap battles; an exhibition of Chicano graphic art in the city; public and student workshops with artist Sandra de la Loza; and panel with Amparo Marroquín Parducci, Salvadorian scholar and Professor the the Department of Communication and Culture at Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA) and a Hemispheric Encounters Co-investogator. 

Adjacent programming included Tamara Cubas’ immersive installation, Esculpir el Silencio, and her workshop, “Encounter with Migrant Women” were presented on April 1, 2023. 

Chicano Fest was co-organized by Alina Peña (Mobilities Cluster Co-lead) and was a collaboration between Hemispheric Encounters Partnership, ITESO (the Jesuit University in Guadalajara), Universidad de Guadalajara, local NGOs in Guadalajara like Guanatos GDL SUR, Rhizome Center for Migrants, and members of the Chicano Community.
