“Bukele y la reinvención de la comunicación política” / “Bukele y la reinvención de la comunicación política” – Distinguished Lecture by Amparo Marroquín
On January 31, 2023, Hemispheric Encounters Co-Investigators and Mobilities Cluster co-leads Amparo Marroquín and Marcial Godoy-Anativia shared the virtual stage for Amparo’s Distinguished Lecture, “Bukele and the Reinvention of Political Communication.” Rosanna Reguillo (ITESO) provided commentary, and Marcial moderated. In this timely talk, Amparo presents her research on Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele’s particular brand of populism, his communication strategies, and the expansion of Bukelismo across the Americas.
El Salvador has a history of being one of the most violent countries in the world. At the same time, it is also the place where an experiment in digital political communication has successfully transformed the ways in which truths and common sense are constructed. We will discuss the narrative strategies used by new anti-democratic and fascist movements to establish communicational hegemony in the Americas and across the world.
This event was co-presented by Hemispheric Encounters and the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics.
