AMBIENAL: Environmental Art Biennial of the State of Rio de Janeiro
AMBIENAL is an Environmental Art Biennale in the State of Rio de Janeiro at NUANF (Environmental Center of Northern Rio
de Janeiro State, UENF) organised by Fernando Codeço, HEN collaborator and former Postdoctoral Fellow, in partnership with CasaDuna, the arts research initiative founded by Fernando and Julia Naidin. AMBIENAL is a long-term program dedicated to the connection between art, territory, and critical environmental education, offering a permanent space for research, creation, and dialogue.
The first edition of AMBIENAL will take place from August 26 to September 1, 2026. Operating in São João da Barra and Campos dos Goytacazes, bringing together artists, researchers, educators, social movements, and communities directly affected by the socio-environmental challenges of the region.The program proposes an intensive seven-day experience based on collaborative processes and site-specific, contextual creations. The residency aims to build bonds, practice deep listening, foster experimentation, and encourage the shared production of knowledge at the intersection of art and territory.
The initiative aims to expand a research-creation network committed to environmental justice, territorial memory, and the imagination of possible futures for the State of Rio de Janeiro, with a primary focus on the Norte Fluminense region.
